If you are asked where you live you may say: “I live in Cairo” or more specifically “I live in downtown Cairo, near Tahrir Square.” Nevertheless, the more accurate answer is, as the literary scholar Arnold Weinstein remarks, that we live in our own bodies. And when our bodies suffer, they let us know in their own language of ache and suffering. Physicians can diagnose the disease but not the illness. They can tell us something about the disease and the cure, but only narratives by the afflicted can provide a sense of the illness and human experience of pain day by day. The ancient book of Job can now be read as a modern-day narrative about the cancer patients, and in the modern West and East we can read narratives about illnesses and human suffering in the books of Milan Kundera (The Farewell Waltz, 1972), Ghassan Kanafani (The Blind and the Deaf, 1972), Susan Sontag (Illness as Metaphor, 1978), Elias Khoury (Gate of the Sun, 1998) and many others.

We are looking for papers on the representations of health and illness in Arabic and Western poetry and prose, and how they relate to or diverge from their counterparts. While we strongly encourage submission of comparative studies, the AWL Journal will consider articles focused on only one author or work.
